Paul Coleman is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at Coleman Mental Health Associates specializing in patient mental health. What is essential for people to realize is “no two people are the same”. Thus, each patient will receive an individualized, collaborative care plan in this outpatient office. Treatment includes several mental health conditions that have depression, bipolar, anxiety, trauma, LGBTQI issues, and medication management, to name a few. My primary focus and goals are to provide a safe place for patients to realize their strengths. This includes working together with listening to your concerns and developing customizable, collaborative treatment plans that helps you feel empowered in making decisions regarding your care. This biopsychosocial paradigm takes a holistic approach to identifying and assess overall health. This includes exercise, sleep hygiene, and psychotherapy to name a few. While medication management is part of this practice, not everyone needs medications, therefore prescribing when necessary. The goal is to get to the root cause of your struggles and help you move forward.

I believe that each and every one of us is the expert of our own lives, but sometimes we feel overwhelmed and need guidance as we navigate life's challenges. This gets more challenging if you're an LGBTQ+ person in the south, but working with an affirming, competent therapist can make a big difference. Clients come to me looking to connect with a fellow human whose been there because therapy is a place where you feel genuinely seen & valued. Together we'll collaborate to achieve what you envision for your life and create lasting change. I help my client make sense of the confusing and messy parts of life. Areas of specific focus are: anxiety, self esteem, sex, relationships, life changes, identity exploration and development, sibling relationships, and more providing neurodivergent and queer affirming care. Many of my clients have had troubles connecting with other therapists or are hesitant to start the process. I get it! Vulnerability is scary as hell and the idea of therapy can be intimidating. I hold such gratitude to offer a space that feels safe & open to allow those I work with to freely explore themselves. I deeply value the relationship between a person & their therapist and prioritize nurturing this connection to make our work together the most meaningful for you. My role is to listen, offer perspective, and provide supportive challenge & guidance to empower you in supporting yourself as you continue to move through life. I tell my clients: at the end of the day, I’m here to work myself out of a job. Therapy with me integrates talking, exercises, and – brace yourself – sometimes homework between sessions to practice what we’re working on. Together, we will cultivate healthy habits, gain tools to navigate life's changes, identify unhelpful patterns, & discover or reconnect with your truest self. I believe we all have the capacity to heal and grow. Warm, intentional support during that journey can make all the difference. Through my own experiences, I know how powerful human connection can be in achieving change. I also know the therapist you trust for help is an important choice. My goal is to foster a space where all parts of you feel truly understood & aligned. Are you having difficulty adjusting to school? Away from home for the first time? Looking towards the future when you will have graduated and are out on your own? Wondering who you are and who you want to be? Facing so many changes and transitions at once can be completely overwhelming, even on the best of days. Sometimes it really helps to talk with a neutral person who can understand the pressure you are under, but who is not in your immediate circle. I specialize in supporting people who are facing transitions in their lives, especially when this feels overwhelming or intimidating. My practice is open and affirming to people of all ages, genders, sexual identities, ethnic backgrounds, and spiritual beliefs.
Searching for a therapist can be one of the most difficult parts of coping, healing, and self-empowerment, because it's the first thing you must do. You must force yourself out of your comfort zone and out of whatever routine you've had before, to take the initiative and embark on a new path. When we're at our best, stepping out of our comfort zones can be daunting; when we're feeling vulnerable, it can seem nearly impossible. No matter what prompted you to take this first step, I'd like to be there for your second. I have a deep affinity for those affected by trauma, including sexual assault and combat, as well as extensive experience and desire to work with those with perinatal issues (such as post-partum depression), issues of gender and racial justice, childhood and teenage transitions, depression, and chronic illness. My therapeutic approach focuses on creating an empathic environment where you feel safe and relaxed, and where we can use every tool available to brighten your present and empower your future. This may involve playing a game or taking a walk as often as we spend time in the office.
I bring many years of US and international experience into my practice. I have expertise in working with college students and young professionals who suffer from depression, anxiety and trauma. The majority of my work focuses on lifestyle modifications and medication management. My approach to treatment is transparent and highly personalized. I value developing a trusting and respectful relationship with my patients and take the time to understand the values and needs of each individual patient.
I offer therapy sessions in both English and Mandarin. I was born and raised in China, and later came to the U.S. for grad school. My personal experience in navigating the challenges of life transitions, cultures, and expectations inspired me to create a safe, gentle space where you can be heard and understood. I’m here to listen to your stories and unspoken emotions, and help you find your true voice. Together, we’ll explore patterns that may be holding you back and gently uncover the myths that no longer serve you. I’m not here to judge or talk down to you—I’ll be patient and supportive as you grow. I’ll celebrate your progress because I genuinely care, and I hope to make this journey one of curiosity, compassion, and even joy as you step into the best version of yourself.

Our College Mental Health Programs provide young adults with educational opportunities to build collegiate resilience, academic and wellness tools, and social connections. Our work is steeped in the principles of psychiatric rehabilitation: personhood, hope, choice, and self- determination, and we believe in recovery from mental health and substance use conditions, and the power of peers, mentoring, collaboration, mutuality, and inclusive communities.
I offer expertise in long-term individual therapy, meeting with most of my patients weekly or more. I enjoy working with difficult issues including depression, anxiety, and trauma. These issues often have many manifestations like panic, procrastination and avoidance, low energy, low confidence, eating and sleep disturbances to name only a few. I work hard to offer a space where we can listen very carefully to what is contributing to these problems. My belief is that our problems point to something more than disorder and dysfunction; they point to something that is profoundly unique in each of us. I look forward to hearing from you to talk about how I can help.
College and graduate school can be times of great personal growth, but also times of great challenge. It can be overwhelming to adjust to new living situations, to figure out what you want to do and who you want to be, and build and maintain relationships, all while trying to get your work done. Carrying the weight of it all can feel heavy…and I would love to help you feel less alone. Together we can examine the tough questions and situations. You can have a place to put everything down, rest, and feel okay with not having it all figured out yet.
