Therapists for college students near New York, NY
TriBeCa Therapy is a center for psychotherapy that was founded on the assumption that human beings are original, imaginative, inspired, and inventive. We particularly love our work with young adults and college students and are connected to issues they deal with. Issues related to sex and dating, drugs and drinking, depression and anxiety and academic pressures aren’t topics that will freak us out. We can handle it. College students frequently discuss with us challenges such as: making friends in ways that don’t involve alcohol, making friends as a person of color, navigating social situations that demand connecting with strangers (like in the cafeteria) and finding “their people.” We work to create a partnership that takes these challenges on together, trying new strategies, taking increasingly bigger risks and dealing with the disappointments and celebrating the successes that follow. College is a time when many young adults are dealing with very adults issues like sex, sexual assault, eating disorders, substance abuse, managing money, race, class, and career choices. Creating a space where young adults feel comfortable talking about these issues is a strength of our therapists and a non-judgmental stance is key. The object isn’t to insist on a particular set of values or practices, but to support young people to understand what they are dealing with and to make active choices about who they want to be. I am a compassionate, thoughtful, experienced psychologist, and I am very interested in getting to know you and your struggles. I work with individuals and couples, from late adolescence to older adulthood. My work is collaborative and starts by creating a non-judgmental space in which you can feel comfortable sharing your symptoms and exploring your past, present and future. We will work together to help you understand and negotiate the external and internal obstacles preventing you from achieving greater contentment in your life. I use evidence-based approaches, such as CBT, DBT, and ACT, to help clients reduce anxiety and depression, better cope with stress, and improve their self-esteem and relationships. I also utilize attachment and psychodynamic theories to help clients construct a meaningful narrative of their history, help identify harmful patterns in thinking, behavior and relationships, and help clients liberate from them. I specialize in both short-term and long-term psychotherapy aimed at increasing self-awareness and identifying patterns that contribute to mood symptoms and difficulties at work or in relationships. I look forward to speaking with you about the challenges you are currently facing so that we can establish a plan to help you overcome them and lead a more satisfying and fulfilling life. I look forward to learning about you and partnering with you through psychotherapy to help you reduce stress and find greater satisfaction with your life.

We work in the evolving tradition of contemporary psychoanalysis, with a relational focus and deep respect for the soci-cultural and political complexities we face as individuals and collectively. We respect the deep nature of many emotional issues and their interpersonal origin in real life, often traumatic, developmental experiences. We seek to understand your unique developmental needs and how they may have been neglected, hijacked or violated by important figures in your life, as well as social institutions on whom you relied. Therapy - whether individual, couples' or group - is a process of understanding, healing and growing beyond these deep wounds and over-accommodations, freeing you for the emergence of a life that is more authentically your own. Therapy is best done through an open, intimate relationship with a professional dedicated to understanding your unique pain, who recognizes your needs for safety and emotional validation, and creates the space for the emergence of greater self-expression, agency and growth, allowing you to be more fully engaged and alive to yourself and to others. More in control of shaping your identity and destiny. As a group of clinicians we are deeply familiar with the struggles of launching oneself into adulthood. I am a licensed clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst with over 20 years of clinical experience. My approach to therapy is collaborative, and geared toward reaching a better understanding of the relationship between your emotions, behaviors, and experiences. I see the therapeutic relationship as the foundation for exploration and growth through fostering a safe space, where you're able to freely express your thoughts and feelings. This process allows for a deeper understanding of the dynamics that may be influencing your current difficulties. In addition to my other clinical expertise, I am also trained in psychosomatic psychoanalysis, and have experience working with individuals who present with physical symptoms and illnesses. I address the complex interplay between psychological and somatic factors, and provide a comprehensive approach that considers the unique needs of my patients. If you're seeking a compassionate and collaborative therapeutic experience that can help you gain insight and navigate personal challenges, I'm here to support you. My consulting room is welcoming to anyone who wants to come for therapy, irrespective of their sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, culture or gender.

Many clients achieve significant progress with CBT in a relatively short period of time. Other clients benefit from interpersonal or relationship-oriented therapy. When we work together, we’ll break down your patterns of thinking and behaviors that cause challenges and hold you back from enjoying life. The fact that you are here, tells me that you want to work on yourself. You want to see your truth, become stronger, and earn the ability to become self-reliant. Congratulations on taking these steps. You are one step closer to beginning your journey. I have been in the helping profession since 1987. My objective is to help people create positive changes in their lives. I provide a relaxed atmosphere, use modern clinical concepts, and work collaboratively with each individual, couple, or group. I encourage my clients to hone in on their strengths for their personal growth and transformation in order to bring in more love and satisfaction into their lives. My integrative and wholesome approach: I am also a Registered Drama Therapist (RDT), Certified Fitness Instructor, Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT), and a PAIRS-certified instructor (helping couples who are struggling with their relationships). With all of that, we would be working collaboratively using a wholesome approach. What this mean is, I integrate many of the well-known evidenced based practice modalities and theories, EMDR, as well as wellness and yoga principles (e.g. breathing, mindfulness, focus attention, awareness, etc.) within the framework of integrative social work and psychodynamic psychotherapy.
College can break you in quiet ways. Maybe you’re burnt out but still grinding. Anxious but still pretending. You can’t focus, you can’t sleep, you can’t talk about it without feeling like you’re being too much—or not enough. You’re not lazy. You’re not crazy. You’re just overwhelmed, and no one taught you how to deal with it. This is where that changes. Dr. Al-Katib works with college students who are overthinking everything, underperforming despite trying, and getting swallowed by pressure—academic, emotional, social, or all of the above. He helps with ADHD, anxiety, panic, burnout, identity, emotional numbness, and everything else that comes with growing up in chaos. His style is straightforward, respectful, and never sugarcoated. You’ll get strategy, clarity, and support that actually helps you move—not just talk about it. You don’t have to be falling apart to ask for help. But if you are—good. You’ve already taken the first step.

Mission Liberation Psychotherapy is a private group therapy practice located in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. Our foundational philosophy is based on the meaningful engagement between the therapist and client and achieved using Carl Rogers’ client-centered techniques of active-listening, empathy, and unconditional positive regard.
