Therapists for college students near New York, NY
Our group psychotherapy practice offers help with anxiety, depression, relationships, sleep (including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia), eating disorders, body image, grief, addiction, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Our clients tend to be people who are successful in many ways and feel overwhelmed, lost, alone, or in need of some self-esteem building. We particularly love working with college students because by nature they are figuring out who they are and want to be, and the work we do together can be such an important and exciting part of that process. We welcome people from all backgrounds and are LGBTQ+-affirming. Please feel free to reach out - we would love to get to know you!
I work with straight and gay adolescents and adults to resolve overwhelming feelings and navigate difficult life transitions including anxiety from academic pressures, relationship issues, social anxiety and loneliness, family conflicts, grief and loss, and health concerns including insomnia, and self defeating behaviors and trauma. I integrate psychoanalytic, behavioral, and experiential mind-body methods including dream analysis, guided imagery, mindfulness, and EMDR tailored to suit your needs .
As your therapist, I will help you know yourself in a deeper way. In doing so, you will be better equipped to enact changes in your life that will lead to greater happiness and a sense of well-being. We cannot erase negative past experiences. We can, however, work together to help you to better understand and to respond to these experiences in more constructive ways. Using a variety of therapeutic approaches, I will help you to become more aware of your long standing, negative behavioral patterns which are getting in your way of resolving challenges and of establishing and meeting your goals in life. I specialize in working with individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, conflicted relationships, work stress and identity issues. As an alternative to therapy, I also offer coaching services for clients working toward specific personal goals in the areas of career/work, self care (e.g. weight loss, improved work-life balance, meditation/mindfulness practices) and relationships. In addition to my 5th Avenue office, I have offices on East 57th St and in Great Neck, Long Island. I also provide therapy online to residents of NY State.
Since starting private practice, my clients have been for the most part POC, LGBTQ/non-binary, undergrad/graduate students. Since I spent five years teaching as an adjunct and then full-time professor (in nursing), I have some insights into the challenges today's students currently experience and believe I can be a useful asset toward managing any symptoms that may interfere with obtaining your degree. Even though I am a prescriber, I treat the whole person. I don't want to just know the medicine efficacy, or lack thereof; I also want to know what's going on in your life. Is there balance? Are you connected socially? Should we also be discussing any family issues? Going off to school can be challenging and although psychotropic medication plays a role in ameliorating anxiety and depression, we also can engage non-pharmacologic interventions to get you to a better place.
I am a New York State licensed Clinical Social Worker in private practice, with an office in Mamaroneck, NY. During the covid pandemic, I am working with all clients using tele-health. I have had extensive training in Mindfulness, Acceptance & Compassion Based Therapies (aka 3rd Wave Therapy) From my diverse experiences I have learned that: The way you speak to yourself matters. Negative self talk can be detrimental and it can be changed. Shame is a major contributor of emotional suffering and mental illness. This emotion thrives in secrecy. Compassion is a reliable way of improving your relationships, with yourself and others. Life is hard, and many times unfair. Knowing what you need, and developing the skills to support those needs, helps make the best out of life's difficult situations.

I have a virtual private practice although I do see clients in person some Saturday mornings. Based in cognitive behavioral therapy, several years ago I also began working with energy and infuse EFT Tapping into sessions. EFT Tapping for College Students: Feel calmer, think clearer, and stay grounded—one tap at a time. College life can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. Between deadlines, exams, social pressure, and figuring out your future, stress can build up fast. EFT Tapping (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a simple, effective tool that helps reduce anxiety, ease emotional tension, and bring your mind back to a calmer state—anytime, anywhere. What Is EFT Tapping? EFT is a gentle method that combines light tapping on specific acupressure points with mindful attention to your thoughts and feelings. It’s easy to learn, takes only a few minutes, and can be done discreetly—even in a dorm room, study hall, or before a big exam. How EFT Can Help You Students use tapping to: Reduce stress before exams or presentations Ease feelings of anxiety, overwhelm, or sadness Improve focus and emotional balance Build confidence during demanding times Release tension after a tough day Why It Works Tapping helps calm the body’s stress response, allowing you to shift from “fight-or-flight” mode back into a more relaxed, grounded state. Many students find that even a short session helps them feel lighter, clearer, and more in control. You don’t have to push through stress alone. EFT tapping is a practical, empowering tool you can carry with you through every semester. Whether you’re dealing with academic pressure or navigating emotional ups and downs, tapping can help you reconnect with yourself—and move forward with more ease.

My therapeutic approach is catered for each client. For those with anxiety disorders, I use evidence-based approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure and response prevention (ERP) to help my clients learn about the intersections between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Much of therapy includes learning and trying out new ways of thinking, utilizing coping skills that emphasize regulating your nervous system, and safely exposing yourself to anxiety-provoking things in order to overcome your fears. For clients who have experienced trauma and interpersonal/relational challenges, I use trauma-focused CBT and psychodynamic therapy with an attachment lens. I aim to support my clients in processing their experiences, reclaiming their narratives, and connecting to their values. I want to help my clients gain insight on root causes of distress, while also helping them explore how to engage in interpersonal relationships in healthier ways. My style is warm and collaborative. In session, I try to balance insight-oriented and skills-based approaches. I am active in teaching and helping clients develop new, healthy coping skills, in order to deal with stress better. I integrate feminist and multicultural approaches, and strive to help explore the impacts of oppression, privilege, and societal expectations, on mental health.

I am a licensed mental health counselor with 8 years of experience: treating depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and trauma. As a Black woman, I am aware of the emotional distress caused by systematic oppression often inflicted on people of color and oppressed groups: I address these experiences with compassion, sensitivity and honesty in session.
