As a Board-certified M.D. psychiatrist, she specializes in providing psychiatric diagnostic assessments and treatment recommendations for anxiety, depression, OCD and bipolar disorder. Dr. Apraku also gives guidance for mental health concerns related to life transitions, mood swings, anger and traumatic events. As a holistic provider, her focus is on medication management (including for patients wishing to decrease reliance on medication) in combination with extensive psycho-education and referral to a trusted therapist where appropriate. Effective psychiatry requires a relationship between patient and provider founded on trust and mutual understanding. Dr. Apraku's goal is to build such long-lasting relationships to get your mental health as good as it can be. Due to the current state of the world, I'm also working with a lot of individuals who are feeling isolated and cut off from their "normal" support systems to help them manage life's issues. I grew up in the Dallas area, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in psychology. I then attended graduate school at Assumption University because of its affiliation with the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy. My clinical training was thus focused on a cognitive behavioral approach to treating mental health disorders like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder as well as substance abuse issues. I was also intensively trained during my internship in Dialectical-Behavior Therapy and I utilize this skills-based approach to help adolescents and adults struggling to build and maintain relationships, manage their emotions or crises effectively.
