Life can be tough sometimes. We all, at some point, need that extra help to find a new perspective, sort through the chaos, and reach our true potential. I’m glad you’re considering taking this journey with me. I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in Wilmington, NC. I earned a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from ECU (Greenville, NC) and a master’s degree in Counseling from AGTS (Springfield, MO). I love helping people and use a variety of techniques catered to the individual. My approach is usually very straightforward but compassionate. I enjoy working with college students and am a passionate supporter/ally of the LGBTQ+ community. My experience includes a wide range, but I most enjoy working with people with anxiety, depression, ADHD, and problems adjusting to life changes (such as moving out, empty nest, loss of loved one, new career, etc). Finding the ‘right fit’ in a therapist is truly important, so please let me know if you’d like to set up an initial consultation or appointment, or simply contact me with any questions you may have. Hello. I think the most important element of a successful client / therapist relationship is one of safety. A place where you can say and talk about things you may never have said before. I believe that because having experienced that myself is what lead me to this field as well. As a college student you are entering one of the most exciting and yet unfamiliar times of your life. There are so many opportunities yet with that comes potential obstacles. This is the time in your life where you truly begin to explore and define who you are. Your are faced with many choices that either bring you closer to your goal or move you away from it. Technology puts so much at our fingertips and sometimes that can be a obstacle in itself. Many of the very things that you enjoy about college life can become compulsive or even addictive. Think alcohol, drugs, pornography, and sex to name a few.
Many of the students I work best with share a common thread: they feel overwhelmed by the transition of college life and want a safe place to sort through it all. Some are managing anxiety, stress, or burnout from balancing classes, work, and relationships. Others are navigating questions of identity, independence, or self-confidence. What they all have in common is a desire for a supportive space where they can be honest about what’s hard and learn tools to feel more grounded. My approach is down-to-earth and collaborative, so if you’re looking for someone who understands the challenges of student life and wants to walk with you through them, you might find a good fit here.

College is hard! I remember how hard it was in so many ways. I'm honored to be a support to you through this important time in your life. I specialize in anxiety. I also work on post-trauma growth for those with a history of trauma. My approach is both "bottom up" (focusing on how your body/biology is responding to stress) and "top down" (working with your thoughts and mind to better manage the way you are feeling/thinking). I am heavily influenced by my studies in mindfulness meditation and bring that approach into our work. I have a strong interest in neuroscience as well as spirituality. I like to say that my goal as a helper is not to “make you better” but to help you discover that which makes you feel more alive. Your true nature is one of wholeness, contentment, and compassion; let's get you back there.

If you are the person, everyone turns to, who do YOU turn to? You give everything to everyone else but never have time for you. It gets tiring always being the ''strong'' one. I see you. You might be struggling to get through the day or question yourself and your worth. This can look like anxiety, depression, problems recovering from a traumatic experience as an adult or as a child. I want to help you know what you DESERVE. Find the life you want and be more in control of your thoughts, emotions, and choices. Let's look inward and do this difficult but deeply important and rewarding work together. Currently, I can see clients who reside in Pennsylvania, California and North Carolina.

However, in full disclosure, I don't take myself too seriously, and I wholeheartedly feel that being a bit goofy, and being quirky, and maybe a bid different is okay! Many times, it is more than ok, and what makes us more of an individual, helps on the journey to wellness, being unapologetically yourself, putting a laugh out there to the universe and finding the good things in life along the way. Humor and levity may be evident and incorporated into the therapeutic process. I feel that everyone should have the ability to access mental wellness support and counseling. As a military spouse, and moving all over the country for 18 years, allthewhile working in the helping profession, I have grown to recognize the cultural apprehension, inability to access and equity issues that surround access to counseling. Summer Sessions Counseling is founded on the belief that mental wellness support should be accessible by everyone without stigma, physical access and transportation barriers, without requiring a diagnosis, to access one's best self. What is therapy like? What can I expect from my first session? The first session is typically a review of information you supplied on your intake form and address concerns that you may have. As you progress in your therapeutic journey, you will get into the real nitty gritty, strategies & processing activities, psychotherapy, counseling activities, art therapy, journaling and carving a new path to your ultimate goal.

Tara has an energetic laugh that puts clients at ease and enjoys playfully incorporating her love of sarcasm into her work with her clients. She has been known to lovingly call people out on their “bologna” when she hears it and is a great accountability partner. Tara is also incredibly empathetic and provides a warm and safe environment and a quiet listening ear when the situation calls for it. Noticing and reading nonverbal communication and body language is a skill Tara possesses in spades so she often learns a lot even from things that go unsaid. Tara is judgement free and she encourages you to be genuine and authentic. Tara is passionate about working with young adults who are struggling with life transitions or adjustments and those who experience anxiety due to "trying to do it all" and trying to be "everything for everyone". She knows and understands the pressures that our society puts on young adults and aims to help them regain control of the chaos and find some peace. Tara also loves guiding clients towards healing relationships and teaching more effective communication- whether it be with your spouse, a family member, or a co-worker/boss.
