I am a compassionate, thoughtful, experienced psychologist, and I am very interested in getting to know you and your struggles. I work with individuals and couples, from late adolescence to older adulthood. My work is collaborative and starts by creating a non-judgmental space in which you can feel comfortable sharing your symptoms and exploring your past, present and future. We will work together to help you understand and negotiate the external and internal obstacles preventing you from achieving greater contentment in your life. I use evidence-based approaches, such as CBT, DBT, and ACT, to help clients reduce anxiety and depression, better cope with stress, and improve their self-esteem and relationships. I also utilize attachment and psychodynamic theories to help clients construct a meaningful narrative of their history, help identify harmful patterns in thinking, behavior and relationships, and help clients liberate from them. I specialize in both short-term and long-term psychotherapy aimed at increasing self-awareness and identifying patterns that contribute to mood symptoms and difficulties at work or in relationships. I look forward to speaking with you about the challenges you are currently facing so that we can establish a plan to help you overcome them and lead a more satisfying and fulfilling life. I look forward to learning about you and partnering with you through psychotherapy to help you reduce stress and find greater satisfaction with your life.
Mission Liberation Psychotherapy is a private group therapy practice located in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. Our foundational philosophy is based on the meaningful engagement between the therapist and client and achieved using Carl Rogers’ client-centered techniques of active-listening, empathy, and unconditional positive regard. Liberation Psychotherapy’s primary mission is to help clients explore their experiences thereby clients can heal and grow and embrace their strengths and resiliencies. To honor and respect the uniqueness of our clients, we subscribe broadly to a liberation and integrative model because our attention is drawn to the interplay of the clients’ identities and environments. Liberation is understood through the complex realities and histories in which we are living/having lived through: sociopolitical, economic, cultural. With an integrative approach, our therapists collaborate with clients on which treatment modalities may benefit them and can include: affirmative, bibliotherapy, client-centered, cognitive behavior, creative arts, dialectical behavior therapy, existential, holistic, narrative, psychodynamic, sexology, spiritual, and trauma.

Starting therapy can feel hard and overwhelming. As a licensed social worker, I create a warm, engaging, and comforting environment where we will work together to reduce your stress and help you cope with life's challenges. Within our work together, I will draw on my experience with cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, relational therapy, and trauma informed care to tailor the treatment to your needs. I specialize in working with individuals experiencing a range of issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, transitions, and relationship issues. I am especially passionate about treating college students and young adults who are often facing many difficult transitions. While transitions can be very stressful, I have found that they can also be an opportunity for change and the beginnings of a new identity. I am an inclusive therapist who works to create a space that is accepting and nonjudgmental. My belief is that we all have the strength to overcome and grow through life’s challenges. I am passionate about de-stigmatizing mental health and building strong relationships with clients in order to meet their goals and develop lifelong skills. I view therapy as a partnership and look forward to working alongside you.

It takes courage to reach out for help. Sometimes, the tools and supports we have aren’t enough to navigate big transitions and changes in our lives, or to make the changes we long for. In those moments, therapy can help us understand what’s holding us back and develop a plan that will help reduce our suffering and increase well-being. My approach to therapy is warm, collaborative, and goal-oriented. I am passionate about partnering with young adults and families in the journey toward healing and believe strongly in providing identity-affirming, culturally responsive care at all stages of the therapeutic process. I specialize in evidence-based treatment for a variety of mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, traumatic stress, OCD, borderline personality disorder, and ADHD. I also work with individuals who struggle with self-harming behaviors, addiction, and suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors. If you are looking for support and not sure where to turn to next, feel free to reach out for a free 15-minute consultation.
TriBeCa Therapy is a center for psychotherapy that was founded on the assumption that human beings are original, imaginative, inspired, and inventive. We particularly love our work with young adults and college students and are connected to issues they deal with. Issues related to sex and dating, drugs and drinking, depression and anxiety and academic pressures aren’t topics that will freak us out. We can handle it. College students frequently discuss with us challenges related to making friends in ways that don’t involve alcohol, making friends as a person of color, navigating social situations that demand connecting with strangers (like in the cafeteria) and finding “their people.” We work to create a partnership that takes these challenges on together, trying new strategies, taking increasingly bigger risks and dealing with the disappointments and celebrating the successes that follow. Creating a space where young adults feel comfortable talking about these issues is a strength of our therapists and a non-judgmental stance is key. The object isn’t to insist on a particular set of values or practices, but to support young people to understand what they are dealing with and to make active choices about who they want to be. Dr. Marguerat Degaard is a New York State Licensed Clinical Psychologist. Her academic journey started in Switzerland with a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Geneva. Wanting to combine her passion for dance and the art of therapy, she came to the US and obtained a Master’s degree in Dance/Movement Therapy in 1986 from Hunter College, NYC. She worked as a Dance Therapist for 14 years, developing, implementing and supervising creative art therapies programs. In 2005 Dr. Marguerat Degaard received her PhD from Adelphi University. Since then she worked in hospital settings adding teaching and training to her work as a clinician. Throughout the years, she continued to receive education and training in different areas of interest. She has been in private practice part time and full time since 2015. Her approach is integrative and flexible greatly influenced and informed by her artistic background. Her many years of work in the mental health field has taught her profound humility in the face of the deepest layers of humanity. She views psychotherapy as an in-depth collaborative and creative process which expands and frees self-expressions allowing untold stories to be told, contradictions to be bridged, and emotions to be touched or re-touched towards richer and healthier self-understanding and life experiences. She offers psychotherapeutic services in English and French. Her method will encourage and mobilize what she calls the 3 Cs in her patients, i.e. courage, curiosity and creativity. She will support the courage it takes to embark on the therapeutic journey, she will foster a deep sense of curiosity in one’s experiences that help shape one’s humanity through self-reflection and self-exploration work, and the use of creativity to allow new spaces to open and be expanded.
