This world is challenging and it is normal to have periods of struggle. I help clients move through stressful times and life challenges by developing healthier relationships and emotional patterns. As a therapist, I am both very supportive of my clients and I also provide feedback and opportunities for growth. I view therapy as both an art and a science. I tailor my approach to the unique needs of each individual client. I value the diversity of the human experience and therefore affirm and respect those from all racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds, and sexual and gender orientations. I have particular expertise working with Depression, Anxiety, OCD, ADHD, Couples, Career struggles, Trauma, Grief, and issues with Self-esteem and Identity. I enjoy working with young adults and teens. I have worked as the clinical director at several universities, most recently at Creighton University. I have specialized training in DBT therapy. TriBeCa Therapy is a center for psychotherapy that was founded on the assumption that human beings are original, imaginative, inspired, and inventive. We particularly love our work with young adults and college students and are connected to issues they deal with. Issues related to sex and dating, drugs and drinking, depression and anxiety and academic pressures aren’t topics that will freak us out. We can handle it. College students frequently discuss with us challenges such as: making friends in ways that don’t involve alcohol, making friends as a person of color, navigating social situations that demand connecting with strangers (like in the cafeteria) and finding “their people.” We work to create a partnership that takes these challenges on together, trying new strategies, taking increasingly bigger risks and dealing with the disappointments and celebrating the successes that follow. College is a time when many young adults are dealing with very adults issues like sex, sexual assault, eating disorders, substance abuse, managing money, race, class, and career choices. Creating a space where young adults feel comfortable talking about these issues is a strength of our therapists and a non-judgmental stance is key. The object isn’t to insist on a particular set of values or practices, but to support young people to understand what they are dealing with and to make active choices about who they want to be. I am dedicated to providing a safe, empathetic space that encourages vulnerable expression. Together, we can unpack your history and develop a better understanding of your life, which sets the foundation for growth and transformation. Are you feeling lost, stuck, confused, unmotivated, or inhibited in some way? Do you have difficulty coping with stress, anxiety, or negative thoughts? Do you want to explore your past, inner world, and relationship patterns? You may want to change your life, but you're not sure how or what to change. Perhaps you feel like you're not living in alignment with who you really are, or that there's something blocking you from reaching your potential. You may have trouble managing your emotions, thoughts, or relationships. You may want a place to unpack your history and develop a better understanding of yourself. If you relate to any of the feelings above, I can help. When we begin work together, we are going on a journey to discover more about what you already know, and what may be hidden beneath the surface. My practice is a space to explore your whole self: thoughts, emotions, desires, past & present, love & hatred, happiness & pain... With this new awareness, you can begin to change.
At Taproot Therapy, our goal is to target the main root of your concerns as a means to create lasting change in your life. We specialize in anxiety disorders and depressive disorders. Anxiety and depression can uproot your life! We are here to help you feel grounded and supported.
We work in the evolving tradition of contemporary psychoanalysis, with a relational focus and deep respect for the soci-cultural and political complexities we face as individuals and collectively. We respect the deep nature of many emotional issues and their interpersonal origin in real life, often traumatic, developmental experiences. We seek to understand your unique developmental needs and how they may have been neglected, hijacked or violated by important figures in your life, as well as social institutions on whom you relied. Therapy - whether individual, couples' or group - is a process of understanding, healing and growing beyond these deep wounds and over-accommodations, freeing you for the emergence of a life that is more authentically your own. Therapy is best done through an open, intimate relationship with a professional dedicated to understanding your unique pain, who recognizes your needs for safety and emotional validation, and creates the space for the emergence of greater self-expression, agency and growth, allowing you to be more fully engaged and alive to yourself and to others. More in control of shaping your identity and destiny. As a group of clinicians we are deeply familiar with the struggles of launching oneself into adulthood. College can break you in quiet ways. Maybe you’re burnt out but still grinding. Anxious but still pretending. You can’t focus, you can’t sleep, you can’t talk about it without feeling like you’re being too much—or not enough. You’re not lazy. You’re not crazy. You’re just overwhelmed, and no one taught you how to deal with it. This is where that changes. Dr. Al-Katib works with college students who are overthinking everything, underperforming despite trying, and getting swallowed by pressure—academic, emotional, social, or all of the above. He helps with ADHD, anxiety, panic, burnout, identity, emotional numbness, and everything else that comes with growing up in chaos. His style is straightforward, respectful, and never sugarcoated. You’ll get strategy, clarity, and support that actually helps you move—not just talk about it. You don’t have to be falling apart to ask for help. But if you are—good. You’ve already taken the first step.
Have you experienced trauma that's left you feeling stuck, anxious, or depressed? Are you frustrated by finding yourself repeating the same patterns of behavior, even when those behaviors are no longer serving you? I create space for you to explore and learn new ways to cope with feelings of depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and past traumas. I offer a warm, empathetic, and non-judgmental approach to explore the issues coming up and learn new skills. We can work together to help you to better deal with the struggles you're facing, heal past wounds, and successfully shift the unfulfilling patterns and symptoms in your life. I draw heavily from cognitive-behavioral (CBT) and psychodynamic techniques, with an emphasis on both practical tools as well as attention to deeper emotions. I also intertwine elements of other modalities including mindfulness & meditation techniques. I also am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). No matter the concern, I use an individualized approach to help you in the unique way you need. I’d love to discuss how I can be of service and I offer free 30 minute phone consults so that you can explore what working together might look like and see if it feels like a good fit.
College is a time of enormous adjustments, especially for students who identify as LGBTQIA+. Alongside the pressures to be successful academically, there are numerous personal challenges to navigate in terms of sex and sexuality, relationships, identity, social communities, and drug and alcohol use. In my work with queer college students, we take the time to understand the unique challenges of this time for you in particular, and I work to cultivate your abilities to meet these challenges with resourcefulness and creativity. We also work to bring you into greater awareness of the unconscious features of your mind, in order to know yourself better and to resolve deep-rooted conflicts.
